Rachel Reeves put on spot over David Lammy Palestine fringe event

Rachel Reeves in the Hot Seat: Shadow Foreign Secretary’s Response to Controversial Remarks at Labour Conference

Rachel Reeves, the shadow foreign secretary, found herself in the hot seat during an interview this morning regarding David Lammy’s participation in a fringe event at the Labour conference. The event featured Husam Zomlot, the head of the Palestinian Mission to the UK, who made remarks suggesting that the attack by Hamas on Israel was expected.

Sky News host Kay Burley pressed Rachel Reeves on whether David Lammy was still set to share a platform with Mr. Zomlot at the reception organised by Labour Friends of Palestine. In response, Reeves expressed her dismay at the remarks made by Zomlot, emphasising that the attacks on civilians, festival goers, and children were completely unacceptable.

She reassured the audience that both Keir Starmer, David Lammy, and the entire Labour Party stood firmly in support of the people of Israel during this challenging time. When asked directly about the appropriateness of Lammy appearing alongside the Palestinian diplomat, Reeves stated that she was not aware of Lammy’s conference schedule and had not heard the controversial remarks. Nevertheless, she made it clear that such remarks were entirely unacceptable and in direct disagreement with Labour’s position.

Rachel Reeves emphasised that Labour stands with Israel and its people, supporting their right to self-defense, the protection of citizens, and the safe return of hostages. Although she remained uncertain about the details of Lammy’s schedule and whether Zomlot would attend the conference, Reeves highlighted Lammy’s unwavering commitment to Labour’s support for Israel.

The Labour conference, which commenced in Liverpool on Sunday, is taking place shortly after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in significant casualties. Husam Zomlot, in an interview with CNN, suggested that Israel was aware that such an attack was inevitable.

In his speech at the Labour conference, David Lammy condemned Hamas’s actions and reiterated Labour’s unwavering support for Israel’s right to defend itself, rescue hostages, and protect its citizens. Story Source
