Former VP voices unequivocal support for Israel, urges for restoration of civility in U.S. politics
In a dramatic turn of events, former Vice President Mike Pence has officially withdrawn his candidacy from the 2024 race for the Republican nomination for president. This revelation came during the annual leadership summit of the Republican Jewish Coalition.
Following an exploratory journey across the nation, Pence disclosed a heartfelt realisation that the moment for his leadership had not yet arrived. He poignantly stated, “To the American people, I say: this is not my time, but it is still your time.”
Pence’s speech resonated with a call for a return to civility in the nation’s political discourse. He urged the electorates to rally behind a candidate who would invoke the “better angels of our nature,” with the promise not just of victory, but a pathway towards restoring a sense of decorum and respect within the political arena.
Amidst his parting words, Pence reiterated his unyielding support for Israel, particularly in its ongoing struggle against Hamas, which he vehemently condemned. Recalling the October 7 terror attack orchestrated by Hamas, Pence crystallised why the bonds between America and Israel remain unbreakable. He echoed, “We stand with Israel for the same reason the American people have always stood with Israel. We stand with Israel because her cause is our cause. Her values are our values. Her fight is our fight.”
The former Vice President underscored the essence of supporting Israel unequivocally in the face of adversity, and implored for an end to any discourse of restraint. He advocated for a robust backing of Israel’s inherent right to self-defence without conditions.
Simultaneously, Pence launched a thinly veiled critique at President Joe Biden’s approach in the aftermath of the Hamas terror attack. While acknowledging Biden’s initial correct rhetoric, he lamented what he perceived as a subsequent lack of support for Israel. Pence further expressed disdain towards the ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran, calling instead for the reinstatement of stringent sanctions.
Pence’s discourse also encompassed a stark warning to his Republican compatriots. He portrayed the upcoming elections as a “time for choosing” between conventional conservatism and a newfound allure of unbridled populism devoid of conservative ethos.
