Welsh independence march through Queen Street

Inside the Fresh Plot to Break Up the UK: Starmer and the Union at a Crossroads

As Wales Teeters on the Brink of Independence, Starmer’s Labour Faces Unionist Test

In an era where the United Kingdom’s unity is more precarious than ever, Wales emerges as a surprising battleground in the debate over independence. Despite traditionally low support for separatism, recent political shifts suggest a growing tension within the Union. Wales, with its rich culture and distinct identity, has historically been the most pro-Union region among the Celtic nations. Yet, support for Welsh independence lingers at 27%, overshadowed by stronger separatist sentiments in Scotland and Ireland.

The spotlight turns to Mark Drakeford’s Labour government in Wales, adopting a notably anti-Westminster stance. This shift, sparked by the Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales, challenges the Union’s stability. The Commission’s report, co-chaired by notable figures, presents independence as “viable,” stirring a debate on its desirability for Wales. Drakeford’s nuanced response underscores a broader discussion on devolution and the Union’s future.

The Welsh Labour’s approach, coupled with Keir Starmer’s leadership, raises concerns among Unionists. Critics argue Labour’s push for more powers to Cardiff Bay signals a departure from staunch Unionism, potentially endangering the UK’s cohesion. The ongoing discourse around devolution and independence reflects deeper political and cultural undercurrents within Wales and the broader UK.

As Wales navigates these turbulent waters, the debate extends beyond the viability of independence to questions of identity, governance, and the very fabric of the Union. The evolving political landscape in Wales serves as a litmus test for Labour’s Unionist credentials and the future of the United Kingdom itself.

  1. A vote for starmer should be classed as treason ……he’s already tried getting us back in the EU 🙄 which the majority voted against with Brexit
